Joseph Platts' Letters

Letter from Colonel Greig, St Petersburg, to Eliza Kerns (nee Tandy) Transcribed from a photocopy of the original [above] held by Daphne Jackson:-

St Petersburg 25th October 1856

My Dear Mrs Kern,

Excuse me, if you please, for not having answered immediately your letter, but an accident has been keeping me in bed all this time and prevented me from writing to you. The Grand Duke, to whom I have spoken of Mr Plats, told me that he has ordered already to appoint Mr Plats to Kertch, as he desired, and that he is astonished that intelligence of this should not have reached him till now.

Being obliged to keep constantly a reclining position and being weak I must of necessity close this letter, begging your pardon for its shortness. The question, which interested you, is, however, answered in the affirmative and you may announce it to Mr Plats. My best compliments to your husband.

Very sincerely and respectfully yours,

Greig
