Marie Wilhelmina Webster (1879-1981)


MARIE WILHELMINA WEBSTER Born in 1879. Kherson, for several years, leaving eventually to go and live in Odessa in Dom (house) Skarzhinski. At the age of 5, I was small bridesmaid at Aunt Amelia’s wedding. In the summers we often went on trips to Akkermann, spending happy times at Shaba (at the mouth of the river Dniester) and Slavonta (in the forests of Poland). When I was 8 I went with Mamma to fetch Amelia from school and later taking Elsie also 1891.

In 1892 I was bridesmaid at Willie’s wedding.
In 1893 I was bridesmaid at Amelia’s wedding.
In 1894 Arthur was born.
In 1895 Dora was born.
In 1896 bridesmaid at Elsie’s wedding.
In 1897 the tragic death of Mr. Ford.
In 1898 grand Kovalenko wedding when V.K. and I were paired!
1899 went to Petropolis with Wagstaffs when Uncle W. was Consul General.
1900 Harold born. I returned with Aunt A. to Jersey where Mamma came to fetch me for my wedding (which I turned down) and on to Riga.
1901 Stanley born. I was bridesmaid at Winifred’s wedding in Riga.
1902 Elsie died. Vi was born.
1903 Engagement to V.K. in Sept. and broken off in December.
1904 Joined Wagstaffs in the Schwarzwald.
1905 The Pogrom year in Odessa.
1906 Went with Mamma to Langen Schwalbach and dodged off for flying visit to see A.E. and Co. in Derby.
1908 Wildungen with Papa where he died. Bringing back his body to Odessa with the Wagstaffs.
The following years lived with Mamma in dom Oton, Cathedral Square and at Stapelberg’s paint and varnish factory (with Clayton and Enia).
1911-12 Remeslennaya Street in our Church building.
1913 Moved to the Kulikovopole where Mamma died in 1914 (just after my operation) when Aunt Mary Rae and Amelia came to be with me - then I went to Riga with former.
1914 War declared. I was married to John in Odessa.
1915 Dnieper river trip with John (sad at stations peasants weeping as their menfolk were taken to the war.) We lived on at the Kulikovopole till 1918.
1918 Left Odessa as the Germans were approaching. See other papers for details re journey to Murmansk and on 5th May arrived Newcastle and thence to London. 1 Dudley Road, Kilburn. John returned to Murmansk. I lived at 96 Brondesbury Villas. Clayton also came there, then I went to “in-laws” in Yorkshire. With John’s return we lived in Gordon St. finally settled in 195 Brond. Pk. John went to Egypt.
1924-27 Went to Roumania with John. After Florence died 1929 John went to 18 Christchurch Ave and I to Putney (1930) from Christchurch Ave. 1931-32 We went to Cavendish Road. 1933 Exeter Road. In 1934 and 1935 Heathfield Park. 1936 John went to Russia. 1938 moved to 114 Brond. Pk.
1939 War declared.
1953 John died.
1956 came to live with Dora.
1962 Came to Whitby Dene.

(Died in Harefield Hospital 27th May 1981 aged 101).
