Joseph Platts and his father-in-law, John Tandy, built and operated a steam flour mill at Kertch in the Crimea. This was destroyed by British forces in 1855 (see Joseph Platts' petition to Lord Clarendon).
The original plans of the mill were preserved and are now in the possession of Daphne Jackson in Dorset. The plans are dated 1852.
